Deceptive Maritime Practices

Georgetown University, Spring 2021

Problem Statement

National ship registries and port and customs authorities need to analyze shipping and corporate data to identify suspicious behavior and flag commercial entities, transactions and/or shipments for further due-diligence investigation.

Problem Scoping and Discovery

Students conducted 55 interviews with beneficiaries in the State Department and the United Nations. They discovered that every EXBS region has different issues relating to maritime deceptive practices and strategic trade control, and the resources available to address these issues vary by country. They also found that while EXBS advisors were knowledgeable about their own region, EXBS lacked a system to share best practices and lessons learned among geographically dispersed personnel.

Solution Proposed

The student team identified that every region has different issues relating to maritime deceptive practices and strategic trade control. The team developed the beta test version of MyEXBS, the wireframe of an online Reddit-like forum designed for cross pollination of best practices across the organization.

Results

MyEXBS is now part of the internal EXBS platform and is currently being used by EXBS Advisors to discuss and memorialize a range of issues.
